KOLHAPUR: In a bid to create more usage of plastic currency, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to launch ‘octroi cards’ for tax payers. The scheme will be implemented in a phased manner, with only transporters getting the cards in the first phase."The KMC will tie-up with one bank for issuing the cards. The tax payers have to open their accounts on the same bank.
The bank will provide the swipe machines which will be installed at the octroi nakas through which the tax payment would be done.
The octroi amount will be directly debited from the account of the concerned taxpayers to the KMC’s account, as it happens in financial transactions made by credit cards,"Octroi superintendent Sanjay Sarnaik told TOI. Initially, the cards will be issued to 30 transporters who have good share in the daily octroi collection of the KMC. The swipe machines would be installed at Shiroli, Central Warehousing Naka, Uchgaon Naka and Shiye Naka."The KMC’s daily octroi collection is Rs 20 lakh in which the 30 transporters share nearly Rs 4 lakh. We have talked to them. The card will reduce the cash handling on the counters and for the transporters, the risk of carrying cash will be lowered. The card will also bring simplicity in the octroi payments which in turn will increase the collection of the KMC,"Sarnaik added.Once the scheme is in place, there will be no financial burden on the KMC as the concerned bank will provide the cards and the swipe machines free of cost. After the success of the first phase, the cards will be provided to any tax payers who want have it.
